This project involves the creation of a new five-star resort hotel in Crete, featuring 180 luxurious rooms. The design philosophy revolves around creating intimate neighborhoods arranged around swim-up pools, with a gentle slope reminiscent of a natural beach. The aim is to offer guests a unique and immersive experience that combines luxury with a connection to the natural environment.
The resort’s layout is designed to maximize privacy and comfort for each guest. Oblique plaster and wooden partitions separate the outdoor spaces of each room, providing seclusion and protection from the strong winds typical of the area. These oblique partitions and other solid volumes feature recesses, referencing the storage niches characteristic of traditional Cretan architecture.
The back elevation of the rooms, where the entrances are located, is designed to be compact, featuring a harmonious blend of stone and off-white volumes. This compact design ensures a solid, cohesive appearance from the entrance. The front elevation, facing the swim-up pools and outdoor spaces, is protected by a pergola system that shields the larger openings from the intense summer sun, ensuring a comfortable indoor climate.
The design incorporates different types of room layouts, or “pilots,” each carefully studied to provide a new and engaging experience for visitors. The use of wood, stone, and plaster in off-white shades pays homage to traditional Cretan architecture. These materials are reinterpreted through more fluid and organic forms, creating a seamless blend of tradition and modernity. The resort’s neighborhoods are thoughtfully arranged to foster a sense of community while ensuring individual privacy. Each neighborhood is centered around a swim-up pool, enhancing the beach-like ambiance. The gentle slope of the pools allows for easy access and a natural flow, reminiscent of a beachfront setting.
The pergola system is a key design element, offering protection from the harsh summer sun while allowing natural light to filter through. This system ensures that the rooms remain cool and comfortable, enhancing the overall guest experience. The pergolas also contribute to the resort’s aesthetic, adding a layer of texture and depth to the architectural design.
