The Kakkos Bay Hotel renovation project involves a comprehensive redesign of the main building, encompassing 680 square meters, located in Ierapetra. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a new 280 square meter building, which will serve as an extension to the hotel’s restaurant and gym. Originally built in the 1960s, the main building presented a unique challenge due to its amalgamation of previous interventions and additions over the years.
The primary objective of the renovation was to reimagine the iconic white arch that characterizes the hotel, infusing it with a new, luxurious aesthetic while preserving its original character. The design embraces a 70s revival style, breathing new life into this classic resort and ensuring it remains true to its heritage.
As visitors approach the hotel’s north-facing entrance, they are greeted by a glass-enclosed, oval-shaped canopy, marking the entrance to the reception area. Inside, the material palette of dark walnut furnishings and cladding, white rendered walls, and bronze metallic details create an atmosphere of luxury befitting a seaside resort. The reception and lounge areas are subtly differentiated by the use of white marble and gray mosaic floors. A standout feature in the reception is the trio of rounded arches framing the hotel’s bar, which has been revitalized with fluted cladding, a Corian worktop, and bronze accents.
All outdoor spaces are equipped with wooden pergolas and patterned wood coverings, enhancing the resort’s cohesive aesthetic. From these outdoor areas, visitors can proceed to the main restaurant. Here, a white rendered colonnade frames the action kitchen, guiding guests toward the shaded outdoor dining hall and the new building. The restaurant’s materials shift to a warmer color palette, featuring oak furnishings, corten-like worktops, mint green render, and natural woven textures. The ‘open book’ structure defining the pastry counter is a noteworthy element.
The new building, a simple rectangular form punctuated by oversized arches, serves as a structural and aesthetic highlight. The arches slice through the building, providing both support and visual interest. The top floor boasts a semi-outdoor space with unobstructed sea views, framed by the arches, creating a perfect spot for relaxation and contemplation. The ground floor extension houses additional facilities for the hotel’s gym and spa, ensuring that guests have access to top-tier amenities.
The Kakkos Bay Hotel renovation seamlessly blends modern luxury with the timeless appeal of its original 60s architecture. By reinterpreting the iconic white arch and incorporating a 70s revival aesthetic, the redesign breathes new life into the resort while honoring its heritage. The combination of sophisticated interiors, thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces, and the addition of new facilities ensures that Kakkos Bay Hotel remains a premier destination for visitors seeking both comfort and style.
