The spa interior design for the 5-star hotel in Santorini draws inspiration from the traditional “canaves” of the island. Historically, “canaves” were storage spaces, primarily for wine, built into caves with domed shapes. These spaces, carved out of volcanic white ash, provided a solid and enduring structure while retaining an easily moldable quality. The serene and unique atmosphere of the “canaves” is translated into the spa’s interior through careful selection of materials. The use of smooth white plaster is a nod to the iconic Cycladic architecture, creating a clean and calming environment. In contrast, the rough stone texture references the raw, carved nature of the traditional “canaves,” adding a layer of historical authenticity to the design.
Color is minimally used in the spa, primarily appearing in wooden elements and strategic lighting. This restrained palette ensures an environment conducive to relaxation and rest, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the tranquil setting. The subtle interplay of light and wood introduces warmth and depth, enhancing the overall sensory experience. By drawing from local architectural traditions, the design introduces a new vocabulary of forms and styles, offering a space with a distinctive character. The combination of smooth plaster and rough stone textures, alongside thoughtful lighting and wooden accents, creates a harmonious balance between traditional influences and modern luxury.
The spa interior at Santo Maris Oia captures the essence of Santorini’s “canaves,” offering guests a unique and immersive experience. The careful consideration of materiality, texture, and lighting results in a space that not only pays homage to the island’s architectural heritage but also provides a serene and luxurious environment for relaxation and rejuvenation.
