Nestled in the vibrant city of Heraklion, the Eco House exemplifies a harmonious blend of bioclimatic design principles and cutting-edge smart home technology. This innovative residence is meticulously crafted to maximize energy efficiency, ensure sustainability, and enhance the quality of living for its occupants. At the heart of the house lies an atrium, serving as the central nucleus that orchestrates the building’s spatial organization and environmental performance.Designed with bioclimatic principles, the house is strategically oriented to harness the sun’s energy during winter while mitigating its impact in the summer months. A skylight atop the atrium floods the interior with natural light during winter, promoting a bright and airy ambiance while reducing reliance on artificial lighting. The house incorporates a sophisticated automatic shading system to regulate solar heat gain and optimize natural ventilation during summer. Concrete awnings and wooden pergolas adorn the façade and open spaces, offering effective shading solutions that complement the architectural aesthetic while enhancing thermal comfort. A distinctive feature of the house is the two-story glass volume on the southern facade, designed as a greenhouse to harness solar energy.

This innovative approach not only contributes to passive heating but also integrates seamlessly with the overall design ethos of energy autonomy and sustainability. As a “smart” home, features a centralized management system located in the basement, overseeing and optimizing all home functions. This includes temperature regulation, lighting control, and energy usage management. The system’s advanced capabilities enable proactive adjustments such as lowering awnings or adjusting lighting levels based on real-time environmental conditions, enhancing comfort and efficiency. In line with its eco-conscious design, the Eco House incorporates biological cleaning systems that recycle water for garden irrigation, minimizing water consumption and promoting sustainable practices. The Eco House at Heraklion stands as a testament to architectural innovation and environmental stewardship. Through its thoughtful integration of bioclimatic design principles, utilization of solar energy, and implementation of smart home technologies, the residence not only offers a comfortable and sustainable living environment but also sets a precedent for future residential developments. By prioritizing energy efficiency, natural resource conservation, and occupant well-being, exemplifies how modern architecture can harmoniously coexist with nature while meeting the evolving needs of contemporary living.
