Mare House, situated just outside the city of Heraklion, is a holiday duplex building designed almost at the edge of the sea. The primary concept was to create a closed shell with the only open elevation facing the sea, emphasizing the stunning coastal views. To enhance this relationship, the sea-facing elevation was “stretched” in height by incorporating an attic, offering an expansive view of the ocean. The building is designed to accommodate two families, with one unit occupying a single level on the ground floor and the other spread across two levels: the first floor and the attic. For privacy, the upper floor level is set back slightly, restricting direct views of the lower house. Each unit features two bedrooms and a large open space that includes the kitchen, living, and dining areas. Both units have outdoor relaxation areas protected from the strong summer sun with pergolas, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoor space comfortably.
The basement provides parking and storage space, ensuring functionality without disrupting the scenic views. A narrow vertical opening and a skylight located on the roof illuminate the main staircase, bringing natural light into the core of the building and enhancing the connection to the natural surroundings. The two houses are distinguished conceptually through the use of different materials. The lower floor house is characterized by stone, providing a solid and grounded appearance, while the upper house features white plaster, giving it a lighter and airier feel. This choice also aligns with the original architectural intention of having a solid base and a lighter upper part. The selected materials are chosen for their increased resistance to the oxidizing coastal environment, ensuring durability and longevity despite the harsh conditions.
Mare House is a thoughtfully designed holiday duplex that maximizes the coastal views and provides comfortable, private living spaces for two families. The clever use of materials and architectural elements creates a harmonious blend of solidity and lightness, reflecting the beauty of its seaside location. The design not only emphasizes the stunning views but also ensures privacy, functionality, and durability, making Mare House an ideal coastal retreat.
