Resort and Spa Hotel in Heraklion

The study concerns the creation of a new 5* hotel consisting of 190 rooms. The main architectural principles were the harmonization with the landscape, the relationship of the built space with nature and the human scale and the view to the Aegean Sea.

The main building which is located at the highest point of the complex, hosts functions such as the reception, lobby and main restaurant. It is in itself a belvedere from where the visitor can observe the sunrise and sunset.

In the most central part of the complex are placed uses such as gym and spa with baths, massage areas and sauna, the second restaurant, the main pool and the pool bar. These functions are organized on two different levels, while using the natural slope of the lot.

The key idea for the elevation design was the use of stone as a “rock slice” that organizes the semi-outdoor space of each room, offers privacy, protection from the sun and the strong wind that characterizes the area. Throughout the complex, “rock slices” are found in various forms, vertical or oblique, solid or as a wall cladding, creating cuts that refine the heavy volumes.

In the first floor, the partitions conceptually describe the outdoor space of each room. The top end of these stone elements is defined by a wide wooden surface, which functions as a handrail but also as a counter. At the level of the floor slab, “hanging” planters are designed between the partitions so that the view from the rooms is still free. On the first floor there are gaps on both sides of the rooms and a pergola that penetrates the volumes, creating a “light” feeling that is a stark contrast to the compact ground floor. Thus, standardization of each wing is achieved, without the visual repetition of the same unit that would create an indifferent elevation.

The ground floor rooms are the most privileged rooms of the hotel. They are closer to the sea and have planted roof for better harmonization with the landscape. The main concept of the design was for the pool to penetrate the semi-outdoor space of the room, creating a more private water zone. The water strip creates a large courtyard, a planter and a sunbed, giving guests the incentive to spend more time outside as the Mediterranean lifestyle suggests. A pergola resting on the stone partitions provides protection from the strong summer sun.
