Mare House
Just outside the city of Heraklion, a holiday duplex building was designed almost at the edge of the sea. The main concept was to create a closed shell with the only one open elevation, the one facing the sea. To emphasize this relationship, this elevation was also “stretched” in height by creating an attic, thus gaining bigger part of the view.
The building was designed for two families: one is developed on a single level on the ground floor and the other on two, the first floor and the attic. For privacy reasons, the upper floor level “retreats” a bit to the back, restricting direct view of the lower house. Each house has two bedrooms and a large open space that includes the kitchen, living and dining room. There are also outdoor relaxation areas, protected from the strong summer sun with pergolas. In the basement there is parking area and storage space.
The main staircase is illuminated by a narrow vertical opening and a skylight located on the roof.
The two houses are separated also conceptually, with the use of different materials: the house on the lower floor is characterized by stone and the upper one is characterized by white plaster. This choice also serves the original intention of the architect, to have a solid base and a lighter upper part.
The selected materials have increased resistance to the oxidizing coastal environment.
