Kakkos Bay hotel renovation

The project involves the renovation of the main building, 680 sq.m., of a bay hotel in Ierapetra, as well as the construction of a new building of 280 sq.m. that will function as an addition to the hotel’s restaurant and gym. The design presented a unique challenge, as the main building, originally built in the 60’s, was an amalgamation of previous interventions and additions.

The main objective was to reiterate the basic form of the white arch that features in the hotel with a new luxurious feeling. The resulting aesthetic of the interventions in the style of 70’s revival, gives a new life to this iconic resort, while also staying true to its original character.

As the visitor reaches the hotel’s north facing entrance, he is met with a glass enclosed oval shaped canopy that signifies the entrance to the reception. Inside, the materiality of dark walnut furnishings and cladding, white rendered walls and bronze metallic details, create a luxurious feeling fitting to a seaside resort. A separation between white marble and gray mosaic floors subtly differentiate the spaces of the reception and the lounge. The main feature of the space are the three rounded arches that frame the hotel’s bar. There, the bar itself is given a new life with fluted cladding, a corian worktop and bronze details.

All the outdoor spaces are outfitted with wooden pergolas and patterned wood coverings.

From such an outdoor space the visitor can head to the main restaurant, where a white rendered colonnade that frames the action kitchen, leads the way towards the shaded outdoor eating hall and the new building. Here, the materials shift to a warmer color palette, with oak furnishings, corten like worktops, mint green render and natural woven textures. It is worth to mention the ‘open book’ structure that defines the pastry counter.

Finally, the visitor encounters the new building. A simple rectangular form with oversized arches that slice through it and act as its structural system. On the top floor there is a semi-outdoor space with uninhibited view of the sea that is framed by the arches, and on the ground floor it will act as an addition to the hotel’s gym and spa.
