Ammos Beach Hotel
The project is a renovation of an older hotel and its conversion into a modern five-star 80-room hotel unit. Its design and construction was complete in less than a year, changing its appearance and structure radically.
The hotel is organized in an L layout and oriented towards the sea, in order to maximize the number of sea view rooms. In the south there are located bungalows with private pools. The restaurant is placed in the northern part of the complex facing the sea, giving the visitor the impression that it is floating.
In general, the main inspiration for the design was its proximity to the sea as well as the special natural character of the area. Important principal of the design was the creation of floating spaces using natural materials and water elements. The visitor’s relationship with the water is crucial to the functionality, orientation and structure of the building.
The configuration of the facades is done with lattice constructions and wooden awnings, a reference to the traditional Cretan architecture with minimalist Japanese influences. The eastern elevation is overlooking the central pool. A pattern has been created in order to organize the long façade and to symbolize the room division, with wooden elements.
On the other hand, the west elevation on the street is treated differently. It is more compact with narrow vertical openings defined by corten steel blades, in order to achieve better sound insulation, privacy and protection from the summer sun.
The entrance to the complex is located in the west, leading to the reception which is a reference point. The strategic combination of materials and the different heights of the ceilings give a dual status to the space, giving the illusion of distinction, the public reception area from the lounge. Finally, the interior of the rooms is characterized by simplicity. They are decorated in natural tones with elements of wood, so that they are consistent with the exterior of the building.
